Cage Diving with Great White Sharks

Would you have the guts to go diving with lethal great white sharks?

After watching Jaws and hearing stories of terrifying shark attacks, you'd think I'd know better. But after running with the bulls in Spain, skydiving, bungee jumping and scuba diving with whale sharks, the adrenalin junkie in me wanted something more.

My thirst for adventure led me to Port Lincoln, a tiny coastal town in South Australia. Here is where the deadly great white sharks call home. And here is where I would get up close and personal with them.

Port Lincoln attracts only the most crazy of adventurers. Cage diving with great white sharks is the town's largest and most popular attraction.

I flew into Port Lincoln on Thursday evening and checked into the spacious and stylish Port Lincoln YHA hostel. If you're wanting to do the shark diving, stay here and you'll get one night free if you stay at least two nights. Great deal!

That night felt like Christmas Eve. Not a moment of sleep was had as excitement and nerves pulsated through my body. When my alarm went off at 5:30am, I rushed to the lobby to meet my tour group, eager to get the day started.

I booked my excursion with Calypso Star Charters. They picked us up from the hostel and drove to the marina. From there, we boarded a boat and off we went!

The sun rose over frothy waves as I mingled with the other passengers on board. During the three hour ride to the Neptune Islands, I befriended an Englishmen and three Aussies; all of us anxious to see some great whites!

We finally dropped anchor and jumped into wet suits. Great whites love cold temperatures so we made sure to grab hoods and diving boots so we'd stay warm in the water.

But before we could climb into that cage, we were briefed on what to do and what to expect below the surface. "Don't stick your hands out of the cage," was one rule I made sure to remember.

After, the bait was released!

Chunks of meat and blood were tossed in the water. Great white sharks can smell blood from miles away. It was only a matter of time before they got to us.

Now was the time to jump in that cage and see some action!

The icy water pierced my skin like daggers while the waves rocked the entire cage, making it hard to balance. It took a while to regain my composure. When I did, I couldn't believe this magical underwater world that surrounded me.

Look, a shark!

All feelings of cold vanished as I clutched onto the bars, never taking my eyes off these massive, dangerous creatures.

I was spellbound, ecstatic and paralyzed with fear. Three great whites came and went. All of them swam right beside the cage and eyed us with curiosity. I could've sworn the look in their black eyes were daring us to stick our limbs out of the metal bars.

Before I knew it, our hour was up. I climbed out of the cage and realized I was shaking; partly from the cold and partly from this surreal experience.

The rest of the afternoon was spent gushing about the dive and rehashing that adrenalin filled hour under the sea. This adventure is definitely something I'll remember for the rest of my life!

If you want to spice up your life, shark cage diving is the way to do it! Great white shark cage diving is only done in South Australia, California, Mexico and South Africa. If you ever travel to any of these four destinations, book a tour and get ready to live on the wild side!
